Bilateral agreements
Licensing agreements under ECL provide users with the opportunity to copy both Danish and foreign material. Danish rightsholders receive remuneration for such copying directly from Writing, whilst remuneration for foreign rightsholders are remitted to foreign sister organisations that send them on to their national rightsholders.
Similarly, Writing receives remuneration for Danish rightsholders if their works have been copied abroad.
Bilateral agreements are entered between Writing and foreign sister organisations in order to be able to exchange remuneration.
There are two types of bilateral agreement – A and B.
Type A agreements mean that remunerations are exchanged between countries.
Type B agreements mean that the remuneration remains in the country where it is collected. Remuneration for copying Norwegian material in Denmark, for instance, is distributed to the Danish rightsholders, while remuneration for copying Danish material in Norway is distributed to the Norwegian rightsholders.
